Signs your disposal may need replacing
A disposal that hums, leaks from its body or keeps tripping may be past repair. Some problems can still be fixed, so mention what it does.
- The disposal has a confirmed body leak
- A technician has found a failure that is not economical to repair
- You are planning to replace an existing unit with a compatible model

Call (720) 731-0399Checking the fit before replacing
Have the current model and a photo of the under-sink layout available if safe. Ask the provider to check mounting compatibility, cabinet space, drain height, and the power connection. A replacement disposal will not by itself resolve an obstruction farther along the kitchen drain.
What a disposal replacement quote should cover
The new unit has to fit the sink, the drain and the dishwasher, so ask how each connection is handled.
- New unit, mounting components, and supply responsibility
- Drain and dishwasher connection changes
- Electrical work if required
- Removal, disposal, and operating checks
Before you call about your disposal
- What it does when switched on: hums, runs, leaks or nothing
- The brand and horsepower, from the label underneath
- Whether the dishwasher drains through it
- Whether you have bought a new unit or want the provider to supply one
While you wait
Switch the disposal off and leave it off. Never put your hand inside, and clear the cabinet underneath.
Price depends on access, parts and what the assessment finds, so ask for a written quote before you approve any work.
Questions about garbage disposal replacement
Can I use a disposal I already purchased?
Ask the installer before scheduling. Compatibility, supplied parts, installation charges, and responsibility for product warranty claims should be clear.
Will a new disposal fix a slow kitchen sink?
Only if the disposal is the relevant problem. A blocked trap or downstream drain may need separate clearing. Explain whether water backs up with the disposal off as well.
Is it a repair or a replacement if my disposal just hums?
Humming often means the motor is jammed. That can sometimes be freed, but a disposal that hums and leaks, or keeps jamming, is usually a candidate for replacement.
